Island 2007

The proposal is for an island, a seating lounge which sits in the middle of a public space-an in-between space having a lot and no action depending on the public flow.

The island has a massive surface which opens up at intervals to form adjustable seats, and in so doing reveal a box lined in mirror – a pandora’s box of endless reflection.

The island has sound.

The act of lifting the seat effects a qualitative change in the sound. The sound is barely audible, as if imagined, but enough to give it a subliminal presence. The body is enveloped in the sensuality of sound. Corporal space and auditory space combine as sound becomes the vehicle for both isolation and interaction. Lines blurr between creator/ audience, observer/ participant as island becomes a location for the performative nature of public life.
